The best regions for raspberry production aren’t very hot in summers, and there shouldn’t be any rain in harvest season. Many plants like good drainage without losing the water in soil too fast. This is especially important for plants that are harvested early. The ideal situation is when the minerals are surrounded by a thin layer of water and there is air between the organic materials. The roots will circle the minerals and they will be able to absorb the necessary nutrients and will be able to breathe.
The point of drainage is the removal of water and adding limestone and organic materials will make the clay become lumps and improve drainage. It can also be improved by ventilating or plowing the soil, depending on climate factors. If plowing is done in dry air, the clay will not stick to the machine and soil will easily be seperated to a sand like quality, easing the flow of water. Adding sand or pebbles might also improve the drainage of soil, but this will require a great amount of both. As it is expensive, that method can only be considered for small fields.

I have two orange trees, one Meyer lemon tree, a fig tree, a cherry tree and an apple tree in my small backyard. I love having fruit available year round. Unfortunately, our clay soil does not drain well but our fruit trees still do OK. Any advice on improving our drainage?
Actually there are many ways to improve drainage using several soils that are readily available for purchase, but if you want to improve drainage in a cheaper and easier way (at least I think so), use a sponge . Yes… you read right — a sponge!
The Agriculture Guide’s Foolproof Way To Improve Soil Drainage Using A Common Sponge:
- Buy several sponges or collect them throughout your home.
- Locate a pair of scissors.
- Begin cutting your sponges into pieces that are the size of a walnut or hazelnut.
- Mix these small sponge pieces into the soil around trees or plants that need better drainage.
This surprising technique is commonly used at our farms in Turkey. Of course there are many ways to improve soil drainage, but I’m particularly partial to using the sponge method which my father’s associate brought to our attention.
